
I just have watched an inspiring short video by Sheena Iyengar about how to making less choices of products can makes customers to engaged the product more rather than to give them an overwhelmed abundant choices.
Retail industry, especially supermarket or department store, basically doing business by providing kind of products to be bought by the customers.
What and how the retailers selling the products will be the key success factors of their success in the industry, and one of key success factors is to make the customers choose easier.

The following methods might help you to do that :
- Reduce the product assortment.
Make sure the the product you display different significantly than the other product, so the customer will easily distinguish one product to the others. - Give enough information/vivid image about the product brief and clearly
Giving to much information and difficult to understand will only increase the confusion of customer as much as giving them to many choices.
Good signing board or price card will helps a lot in this matter. - Give recommendation about the product being sold
It is a retailers (merchandiser) job to act as a customer's representative in collecting the products available in the market and put it in his/her store. - Categorize the products based on the customer's behaviour
The most common mistake that retailers do are to categorize the products based on their preferences and not based on the buyer/customers.
This is totally wrong, as the purpose of product categorization is to help customers to choose products easier, not to help the retailer to choose products easier. How to classify the product's category should be different with each target customers where the store is located. The customer ways of living, habit and their familiarity to classify products play a very important role here.
Obviously there are still many other things that still need to be considered to increase the store sales such as marketing strategy, the competitors, price policy, etc.
However these four steps are the essential matters to make the customers feels less stressed, thus increase their engagement to purchase a product that they want/need.
